Chapter Six

Roman's head hurt. This past week had been a topsy-turvy of craziness. All he wanted to do was to crawl into his bed with his mate. Hell, even playing with his agitated daughter would have been nice, even if she was acting out so much lately.

Instead, he had to do his job as a future Alpha and glower an intruding werewolf into submission. It was irresponsible, but he just wished his father were here.

Unfortunately, the older werewolf had left to visit the shelter this morning and he had not come back yet, so this new development had landed into Roman's lap.

Maybe it would have been easier if this entire affair hadn't hit so close to home, but Lysander's story reminded Roman painfully of Julian's. He really couldn't blame Callaghan for almost ripping Robert's throat out, since he himself had done the same to Tyrone Capitano.

He had to be at least a little level-headed about this, but he didn't even bother trying to hide his irritation."So tell me, Mr. Samuels, what exactly did you think you were doing?"

"I was coming to take a problem off your hands, Mr. Montblanc," the man replied. He'd started to recover after Callaghan's attack, but apparently, the blow to the head hadn't improved his intelligence any.

"Lysander is not a problem. He is a guest and a friend, and he is a Bearer. He is also Callaghan's mate." Roman leaned in closer to Samuels. "You know how that works, don't you, Mr. Samuels? I think Callaghan made it pretty clear earlier, in case you've forgotten what it means to be a shifter."

Samuels's eyes flashed with a shadow of fear. Clearly, he remembered Callaghan's attack and had no desire to relive it.

Still, he was not about to back down so easily. "Lysander is a half-breed werewolf. He cannot be a Bearer. I know you are a good man, Mr. Montblanc, and you're probably trying to do the right thing here, but so am I and the fact remains that Lysander killed a man, a good shifter I called a friend."

"He killed a man who attacked him and tried to rape him," Roman said bluntly. He wasn't really comfortable revealing such details, but he was furious, and the full moon was making him incredibly protective of everyone in his pack—including Lysander. "If it's any comfort, I'm pretty sure your so-called friend got away easy. Callaghan would have torn him to pieces. Slowly."

Robert's face drained of blood. "No. Jake couldn't have done something like that. It is a lie."

"How do you know? Did you really see what happened? Did you even bother to ask?"

Silence. Of course he hadn't bothered to ask. People often just assumed, especially when it came to someone who they already disliked.

"But... I don't understand... Jake was trying to help him..."

Roman sneered. "Oh, please. We're not in the Middle Ages anymore. We don't help people who are in heat by fucking them." He took a deep breath, struggling to calm down. "At any rate, Lysander's nature is not in question.
